Røros World Heritage
In 1980 when Røros was included on the UNESCO list of world cultural and natural heritage the main reason for the selection was because of the town’s unique collection of wooden buildings. The town has managed to preserve much of its original character. The street layout dates from the 1600s and houses and the buildings date from 1700 and 1800. These wooden buildings are still in use as residences and shop buildings.
In addition to documentation of the Røros community, Røros Museum also has responsibility for the documentation and disseminating knowledge of the World Heritage site.
