From ore to copper

The feature of this guided tour is centred on "Malmplassen" (the ore yard) and "Kølplanken" (the fenced in area across the river from the smeltery. The area was earlier used for charcoal storage). The tour starts on the ramp at the "Smelthytta" museum entrance and begins with a general description of what can be seen at "Malmplassen" and includes, among others ‘"Hyttklokka" (the smeltery's bell), "Stangvekta" (beam balance drive-on scales) and ‘Hyttstugu’ (administration and laboratory)

.

From the "Sagbrua" (saw bridge) over the Hitterelva river we can view many of the other production facilities, "Tørkhuset" (drying house), "Sintringa" (a building where the sintring-process was carried out) what is left of "Kokshuset" (storage building for coke fuel) and dismantled parts of the cable lift from Storwartz mining area.
We pass on the inside of "Kølplanken" over the charcoal storage yard to the smelting area. Adjacent to "Kølplanken" we find the huge slag heaps comprising waste left after the smelting process. The tour ends in the unheated area of "Smelthytta" with an explanation of the various activities that took place here right up to the time it was ruined by fire in 1953.

Tours are arranged daily during the period 20.06 – 15.08 starting at 12.30
The tour is included in the cost of the entrance ticket.
